Federal Way police spokeswoman, Cathy Schrock, said the incident took place on Sunday at an apartment complex in Federal Way suburb of Seattle in the state of Washington.

"When we arrived, there was a lot of gunfire already being fired and multiple calls, 911 calls of gunfire," said Schrock.

According to police, as they arrived in the scene three men were on the ground in a parking lot and one aimed a gun at the officers, who then opened fire.

The man died on the scene, though it was unclear which gunfire caused his death.

As police searched the complex, they found two other bodies, including a man and a woman.

The spokeswoman said police were trying to determine if the woman could have been accidentally hit by gunfire.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States.

On averages, 87 gun deaths are reported in the United States each day, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of more than two billion dollars
